Description/Abstract

Nursing turnover is a common healthcare disparity. Research has shown that the nursing shortage has an enormous impact on patient outcomes. The limited number of nursing educators, increased age of baby boomers, and the number of nurses expected to retire has attributed to this shortage. This study investigates management qualities that decrease nursing turnover and ways to improve job satisfaction in an acute care setting. A literature review was conducted using PubMed and CINAHL. Research suggests that managers who utilize transformational leadership, high emotional intelligence, and psychological empowerment correlates with lower nursing turnover. A decrease in turnover will in turn improve the nursing shortage and have a positive effect on patient outcomes.

Keywords: turnover, management, leadership, transformational leadership, emotional intelligence, job satisfaction, nurse retention, work climate
