Description/Abstract

The discovery of gold by Benjamin Parks in Lumpkin County, Georgia near the Chestatee River in 1828 sparked the first United Sates gold rush. Many of the gold mining operations used a technique called hydraulic mining. Mercury is used in this technique to separate the gold from the surrounding rock. Water was diverted from nearby rivers and streams to run through sluices where it became contaminated with mercury. The purpose of this project is to produce a map showing the location of the mines and sluices, as well as soil and slope analysis via remotely sensed data and historic state geology reports to predict what areas may have been contaminated in Lumpkin County, Georgia. The results will be mapped using ArcMap, Erdas Imagine, and eCognition software. The expected result of the project is to be able to provide an updated map of the areas where mercury contamination is most probable from hydraulic gold mining. When mercury contamination is found a contamination model should be constructed and any possible cleanup methods should be explored.
