Diversity In Nature

Lina C. Morgan, University of North Georgia

Description/Abstract

The piece suggested for your consideration is a combination of twelve 1 inch X 8 inch X 12 inch plank wood panels with illustrations burnt and painted onto one broad side of each. Each panel displays a human subject as well as plants and animals. The images are created primarily by soldering iron with watercolors used to create emphasis. Subjects and details include individuals of various ethnicities, genders, abilities, body types and appearances. The piece is intended to highlight the wide range of the human aesthetic and the importance of minority inclusion and appropriate representation in creative expression while celebrating human diversity as it parallels diversity in nature. Stylistically the piece utilizes organic shapes and patterns to convey a more naturalistic theme in keeping with the more rustic, almost folk art, appearance resulting from the mediums used. The progressive nature of the piece comes in the wake of victories and continuing struggles for social justice among various minority groups including ethnic minorities and the LGBT community. In the face of continuing adversity and increased social awareness among the general public the piece invokes a sense of passion and determination while acknowledging the existence of intersectionality and a long road ahead to social change.
