He is Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Sussex. His twenty-five books include A Preface to Greene; R. B. Cunninghame Graham; The Deceptive Text: An Introduction to Covert Plots; Literature and Money; Shakespeare Puzzles; and Final Exam: A Novel (by ‘Peter Green’), praised by Ian McEwan as ‘a stimulating blend of high-energy intellectual and sexual tease.’ He has written poetry, tales, and satiric essays, and, for Wordsworth Classics, he has edited 21 plays by Shakespeare.
