Description/Abstract

This study was designed to explore the methods for developing comprehension and fluency and the necessary skills needed in order for students to be successful in the academic area of reading. However, in order to successfully and continuously grow while reading students must be motivated. Reading includes the principles of both comprehension and fluency as well as student attitude towards reading. The purpose of the comparison of two reading resources, Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Reading Kit and the Learning A-Z Reading Program, is to first measure which of these reading programs is best for improving reading fluency for first graders as well as comprehension. It is hypothesized in the current research study that when assessing the efficacy of the Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention Program, this program will produce more beneficial results in reading fluency. The prediction is based on the premise that this program has a separate phonics program that can be used to supplement the reading program. The hypothesis is that the Learning A-Z Reading A-Z program will result in higher comprehension scores which is based on the premise that there is an available supplemental online program in which students can use to practice reading skills as well as comprehension questions.
